Kings XI Punjab recorded their first win of the tournament by overcoming the Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling game that went down to the wire and ended in a tie. The Punjab side went on to triumph in the Super Over, which was only the second time it had happened in the history of IPL.>
Batting first, the Kings XI Punjab struggled through to a paltry 136 in their 20 overs. That, in part, was possible due to the coming back to form of Yuvraj Singh, who scored a 28-ball 43, while opener Irfan Pathan made 39 off 32. Unfortunately for the side, none of the others did much to make any contributions and in the end, the side could add only 72 runs off the last nine overs. >
In reply, Chennai were off to a flier. Parthiv Patel, who had joined the side in place of the injured MS Dhoni, joined hands with Mathew Hayden and the pair added 65 for the first wicket off less than nine overs.
In fact, even after Hayden fell to Ramesh Powar, there wasn’t much to worry about for the side. Captain Suresh Raina coolly guided the side around to a score of 96 in 12.2 overs, and the side needed only 41 runs off 46 balls when the match turned around.
For one, Raina was run-out by debutant Juan Theron, and then, in the same over, Murali Vijay was trapped plumb in front by the same bowler. Seven runs came off the next over, but Badrinath fell to Yuvraj Singh, but then Patel took the score up to 121/4 in 17 overs. At this stage, the side needed 16 to win off 18 balls, and even when Patel was dismissed to an atrocious stroke they were 16 short of the win.
The rest of the batsmen struggled to put bat to ball, and ten were needed off the last over. Albie Morkel hit a boundary and with 3 needed off 3 balls, Ashwin took a couple. Unfortunately, he could not add that single run needed and the match went into the Super Over.
Chennai batted first in the Super Over and lost Hayden off the first ball to Theron. This was followed by a six from Raina, but he attempted a hoick across the wickets and was bowled to set a target of ten.
Punjab began with Mahela Jayawardene smashing Murali for a six, but then was dismissed. Yuvraj Singh wasted one delivery and that meant that the side needed 4 off three when he reverse swept the ball away to the fence!
Theron was named the man of the match on his IPL debut for his brilliant bowling.
