Pathan smacks ton but Mumbai win thriller

Mumbai Indians won a thrilling encounter against Rajasthan Royals by four runs at the DY Patil Stadium.

Mumbai Indians won a thrilling encounter against Rajasthan Royals by four runs at the DY Patil Stadium.

Chasing a mammoth target of 213 for a win, the Rajasthan Royals were rocked early by the run-out of Swapnil Asnodkar, who was run-out without even scoring a ball. Graeme Smith struggled early against Zaheer Khan – his nemesis – but when he fell immediately after Naman Ojha had been dislodged, the Royals were in dire straits at 40/3. What a superb century off 37 balls>

In walked Yusuf Pathan, and saw through the first few balls. In the process, he also smashed a six and saw his partner, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala get deceived by a slower ball by Lasith Malinga to reduce his side to 66/4. No problems indeed! Well played to get to his half century after return from ICL>

It was in the 11th over that Pathan finally cut loose with the Royals needing 144 off the last ten overs. Ali Murtaza was spanked for three sixes off as many balls! As if to prove that he was not favouring only one bowler, he took on the other two as well; Rajgopal Satish and Ryan McLaren, and soon completed his century off 37 balls! That took him to the quickest century of the IPL in three seasons, breaking Adam Gilchrist’s record of 42 balls, and brought the game back for the Royals.

Unfortunately, around this time, his partner Dogra used up a lot of deliveries, and brought the asking rate up. This was also followed by the run-out of Pathan at the non-striker’s end and the Royals needed 40 off 17.

Dogra, who by this time had got his eye in, then went after Satish for a couple of sixes and a couple of fours to bring the runs down to 19 off the last 12 balls. Zaheer conceded only seven in the penultimate over and with 12 needed off the last, Malinga bowled an over to remember to win it for the side; the bowler ending with 2/22 off his four overs.

Earlier, Mumbai won the toss and rather expectedly batted first on a wicket that looked to be dusting. Brabourne has had this reputation of producing such surfaces which make chasing difficult and hence, putting up a big total was a must for the home team.

Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayauriya walked out with similar intentions and began pasting the bowling all over the parl. Jayasuriya began with three boundaries off the first over, and despite his subsequent dismissal, the Mumbai side almost never went below the ten runs per over mark.

The Powerplay ended with Tendulkar still at the crease and the Mumbai side at 69/1, looking good to get to 200. At this stage, Shane Warne, the Royals captain brought in Dimitri Mascarhenhas and things changed around for the Royals. First it was Tendulkar who was caught plumb in front of the wicket while trying a lap shot, whereas a couple of balls later, it was the turn of Aditya Tare’s cameo to be ended by the same bowler; Mumbai 70/3 and in a trouble thanks to the brittle looking batting line-up.

At this stage, the pair of Ambati Rayadu – chosen after his stint at the ICL – and Saurabh Tiwari – from the Under-19 World Cup winning side of 2008 – got together, and not only did they stem the flow of wickets, but also got after the Royals bowling.

Amit Uniyal went for 41 off his four overs, while Warne also wasn’t allowed to settle as 29 came off his three overs. With the really quick Shaun Tait going for 46 in his four, the Mumbai Indians were propelled by the pair to 212/6 in the 20 overs, their highest score in this format of the game. Both got to their fifties off identical, 30 deliveries, and by the time they were separated, the damage had been done.
