Australia will take on New Zealand in the first of the ODIs at Napier on Wednesday. With their first defeat in the summer, the Aussies will look to get to their winning ways, but the New Zealand will be in much higher spirits and much more confidence than they were at the start of the second T20I as they fight for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. >
The Aussies will make a couple of big changes to their side from the one that took on the Kiwis in the T20Is. For starters, both their quick bowlers, Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes will be out of the squad, and will be replaced by the regulars, Doug Bollinger, Clint McKay and the likes. >
New Zealand, on their part, will be full of all-rounders, but the one aspect of play they need to guard against is to overdo the all-round stuff. In a fifty overs game, it has often been found that specialists are needed at different positions, and the Kiwis will do well to remember that. Having James Franklin at the number five position seems foolhardy, whereas not going in with good, specialist bowlers could almost be suicidal against a team that possesses a strong and a stable batting line-up.
The ground at Napier is a flat-as-a-highway and hence bowling will be difficult on it. Spinners could prove crucial on such a surface, but whether New Zealand look to get in Nathan McCullum along with Vettori remains to be seen.
Despite the loss, the Aussies will be hugely favourites to not only win this game but also the series. Sporting Bet offers 2/5 for their win, as compared to Bet Fred’s 9/4 for the Kiwis to continue with their shock winning run against the world champions. It has all the makings of a yummy contest!
