Akram has also said that he did not know whether Simons held any exceptional talent as a coach. He was also critical about the fact that the BCCI had appointed him as the coach for a couple of tours or so, which he termed as difficult for the players. Another South African to Kirstein’s crew?>

He added that such short stints are likely to be unhelpful for the bowlers, and that there needs to be time to implement the ideas suggested by the coach. Akram said, “I feel a coach should stay with the boys for a minimum period of six to eight months and only then the bowling will show improvement.”

The other thing that Akram was critical about was of sub-continental teams looking for foreign coaches. He also said that he did not understand why the bowling coach also has to be from the same country as the main coach. India is coached by Gary Kirstein, who is a South African as is the mental conditioning coach, Paddy Upton.
