Sri Lanka easily beat Bangladesh in the first game of the tri-series played at Dhaka. India is the third side in the series. >
Batting first after Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and inserted the Bangladeshis in, the openers got the hosts off to a good start. 65 runs were added for the first wicket by the 13th over, before Nuwan Kulasekera got rid of Imrul Kayes. Worse was to follow as the man in form, Tamim Iqbal, then tried to slog Tillakaratne Dilshan to be dismissed for 40 (46 balls), while Raqibul Hasan and captain Shakib al Hasan scored 1 and 0 respectively before Suranga Lakmal had their wickets. >
The recovery came in the form of Mohammad Ashraful who made a patient 75 off 94 balls, something of a surprise given his penchant to go after the bowling from the word go. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah chipped in with 35 and 45 respectively, and with a few lusty blows in the end by Naeem Islam, Bangladesh managed to put up a competitive 260 on the board.
However, what they had not reckoned was the amount of dew that would spread in the outfield, making bowling a miserable occupation. Tillakaratne Dilshan topped it up with the continuance of the form that had seen him mesmerize world bowling attacks in 2009, and smashed a century, whereas his partner-in-crime was his captain, Kumar Sangakkara made a quicker than run-a-ball knock of 74.
In the end, both were dismissed, by then, it was the matter of too little too late for Bangladesh as the visitors had wrapped up the game with more than five overs to spare. Dilshan was the deserving choice for the man of the match award.
India will play Sri Lanka in tomorrow’s game.
