Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has said that the over-enthusiasm shown by the Pakistani cricketers towards the T20 format of the game will end up killing the other formats for the side. Pakistan, it must be remembered, lost a rather one-sided game thanks to their poor batting which saw them get bowled out for 250 odd twice in the first test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. >
And it is not the only this game that has been a problem for the side. In the last 14 innings that they have batted, only twice have they got to more than 350 and have struggled through most of the others. Of course, the less number of tests that the Pakistanis have played has also contributed to the overall issue, but then, it could have been worsened, by what the captain has described as “hyping up Twenty20 too much”
The captain has said that most of the cricketers have been brought up on T20 cricket, whether its club cricket or cricket on streets. This has meant that the techniques have suffered and caused much mayhem when the players are playing in the T20s. Yousuf advised that the board should concentrate on playing more of the longer format of the game.
He said, “One domestic tournament is enough and a World Cup apart from that, but my belief is that you have to reduce Twenty20 heavily. They shouldn’t play it in club cricket - even there you play 20 overs, not 40-over matches.”
