"Sangakkara made mistake batting first"

Virender Sehwag has rubbed salts into the wounds of Kumar Sangakkara’s Sri Lanka by saying that the captain erred in batting first after winning the toss. The Sri Lankans did get to 315 while batting first, but heavy dew in the second innings of the game meant that the Sri Lankan bowlers struggled to control the ball and the Indians were easy victors. Made a mistake?>

Sehwag also said, “We knew dew would be a factor here, in this weather. Even if I had won the toss, we would have fielded.” He also added that because of Sangakkara’s decision to bat first, his spinners could bowl with a dry ball.

India went on to chase the total of 316 despite having lost both, the captain Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar within the first five overs of the game. Despite the early loss of these two stalwarts for the Indian team, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, both scored centuries to guide the team home. Gambhir ended on an unbeaten 150 to steer the team.

Sehwag also credited Kohli and said, “Especially Kohli has done well. He got fifties in the Champions Trophy and against Sri Lanka in his last game. We all knew he had the talent and it was just a matter of performing at the international level.”
