Peter Fulton’s misery at the crease continued when he was dismissed by Mohammad Aamer for 13 runs that had come off 55 balls, while Grant Elliot was bowled off an inside edge by Danish Kaneria. Brendon McCullum did support Ross Taylor – the other overnight batsman – to almost get to his century, but when he was on 97, he edged one to the slips of Aamer. In the process, he missed out on a deserving hundred.

Daniel Vettori did make another fighting 40 down the order, and Iain O’Brien went out swinging, but with Mohammad Asif returning back and picking up a couple of wickets, the Kiwis were left much short. In the end, Asif’s five wicket haul in the second innings to go with his four in the first innings won him the man of the match award.
