The Kiwis ended the first day of the first test match against Pakistan at Dunedin on 276/6 after having lost the toss and being invited to bat first. And given that the Pakistanis had expected a lot more help for the seam bowlers than this, the Kiwis will take this at the end of the first day’s play. Fell short of a century>

The hosts lost a wicket off the very first ball of the match as Tim McIntosh was bowled by Mohammad Aamer. Daniel Flynn followed soon after as the Kiwis slumped to 27/2, before Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor resurrected the Kiwi innings with a century stand. Guptill has had performed reasonably well in the ODIs but his game is more suited to the test match format and today he showed his mettle while getting to a half century. Came back to take three wickets>

After Guptill’s fall, Taylor carried on the good work and was nearing his century when he edged one from Saeed Ajmal to the slips. He fell for 94 as the Kiwis lost a couple of quick wickets after that to hand back the advantage they had at 192/3 – to slump to 211/6.

It took a partnership from Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori of 65 runs to win back the initiative as the Kiwis ended on 276/6. Vettori was dropped off the first ball he faced, and went on to score an unbeaten 40 off only 44 balls. McCullum was unbeaten on a more sedate 25.
