Sri Lanka pile on the agony for India

It was very imminently, a day to forget for the Indian side, as a pair of Jayawardenes took to the crease just after lunch and did not get separated till the end of the day’s play. Sri Lanka ended the day at 591/5 in reply to India’s 426 and looked to have batted the hosts out of the game. Sixth double century took the game away>

Resuming at 275/3, India needed some quick breakthroughs to get through to the tail of the Lankan batting. However, on a track that afforded almost nothing to the Indian bowlers, the pair of Thilan Samaraweera continued piling on the agony. The new ball was taken, but defensive fields and a featherbed of a wicket did not help much. The breakthrough did come, when Samaraweera was surprised by the extra pace of an Ishant Sharma delivery and pulled it straight to Yuvraj Singh at square-leg. It was a wonderful tumbling catch by the fielder that sent the batsman back. Will be scratching his head>

Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka’s all rounder came in next and looked as comfortable as anyone else. However, he was dismissed at the stroke of lunch, given out – probably even wrongly – to Harbhajan Singh; caught down at short-leg by Gautam Gambhir.

In the meantime, Mahela Jayawardene, completed his half century and went into lunch on 86. Post-lunch, the runs began to flow at a fair clip and Mahela reached his century. Prasanna Jayawardene, the wicket-keeper, also did not look too ruffled as he batted on till tea without any problems.

Jayawardene was soon approaching another milestone, his double century, and with the bowlers able to get nothing out of the pitch, he got there towards the end of the day’s play. Prasanna completed his fifty and ended the day, unbeaten on 84 as the two had added 216 for the sixth wicket.

With the Sri Lankan lead fast approaching 200, it is only evident that only one team can win this contest. They will look to get to a big enough lead on the fourth day and not want to bat again in the game. However, it now remains to be seen when the tourists declare in order to give their bowlers enough time to bowl the Indians out.
