The game was deemed as an official ODI, but was essentially a warm-up encounter before the second leg of the English tour started. With a heavy outfield and overcast conditions, Scotland won the toss and elected to field, but saw the Aussies run away to an explosive start. Watson’s 43-ball 68 propelled the Aussies to 104/3 in only the 16th over, before Hussey and Voges took over. Hussey’s 11 came off only 83 deliveries, whereas Voges scored 72 off only 64 balls.

Gordon Goudie, Scotland’s medium pacer did run through the lower-middle order with a five-wicket haul, while Gordon Drummond ended with 1/35 in his ten overs but could not prevent the Australians from rattling 345 runs in their fifty overs.

In reply, the Scottish were rarely in the match, after the first wicket partnership added 51 runs in a little over nine overs. Dirk Nannes, who was making his ODI debut for Australia began badly, but broke the partnership, and after that, the rest of the batsmen barely managed to cope with the Aussie quicks. Watson added to his half century with a three-wicket haul and Scotland was all out for 156.

Hussey was the obvious choice for the man-of-the-match award.
