Australian skipper Karen Rolton has given up her post as a captain post the disappointment of the Women’s T20 2009 final. The result however is not what led to her decision.
Rolton’s cricketing success draws parallel from none other than herself. Being Australia’s most accomplished batsman of all time Rolton is considered as the world’s most consistent player. Her stepping down as a captain however does not reflect her retirement. She will stay in the team and ensure a smooth transition for her successor Jodie Fields.
Rolton began her career at the age of 20 when she debuted in 1995. She has scored a Australian-record 971 Test runs from 13 matches at 60.68, and more than 130 ODI runs. She was also the first ICC Female Cricketer of the Year in 2006. Under her brilliant leadership, Australia has won six ODI series.
Speaking about her decision, Rolton disappointedly says, “I would have loved to have finished my time (as captain) playing in the final at Lord’s but we weren’t quite good enough,” adding, “It was a big decision. But I think the timing’s right. I am not retiring!” Rolton will play for Australia for the Ashes and ODIs.
