In June 2009, after the World Twenty20 in England is over, Karen Rolton will abandon the post of the captain of the Australia national women’s cricket team. During this Twenty20 tournament, Jodie Fields will be the vice captain of this team. Immediately after this tournament is complete, Australia Women would embark on an England tour. For this tour, Jodie Fields would be the skipper and Alex Blackwell would be promoted to the post of vice captain.
Jennings remarks
The head of the Women’s selection panel, Margaret Jennings, disclosed that Rolton has decided that the time is ripe to transfer the leadership to a new generation at the end of the tournament. Jennings added that this decision would not have been easy and the credit of this decision goes to Rolton and her leadership skills. Rolton has offered a golden chance for Fields and Blackwell to build up their leadership skills. Rolton would continue to play under them to support this hand over.
Squad for Twenty20
Jennings revealed that for the Twenty20 tournament, the team has lost Leonie Coleman and Emma Sampson due to retirement. Delissa Kimmince is rather unfortunate as she has not been selected for this tournament. However, Kirsten Pike has returned from injury and is back in the team. Elyse Villani has been included in the team for the Twenty20. The result of these 2 inclusions is that both experience and youth are added to the team.
