Chennai Super Kings could have made a really mammoth total in Durban on 27th April 2009 while playing against Deccan Chargers, but in the end had to be content on a sufficiently competitive score of 165 for 6 in 20 overs.
Good start by Hayden
The beginning was not very favorable for the Kings as Parthiv Patel lost his wicket before scoring a single run. However, the other opener, Mathew Hayden was not affected and the leading scorer of the current tournament continued to smash bowlers all over the field. He boldly attacked RP Singh, the highest wicket taker of the league. Fidel Edwards was not spared either. Hayden simply bashed him through the off side. Suresh Raina was Hayden’s aggressive partner and both were fortunate to survive dropped catches. For the 2nd wicket, this duo collected 64 runs.
Oram ensures respectable end
During the powerplay overs, the Kings accrued 62 runs and lost Raina. However, Mahendra Dhoni and Hayden continued the onslaught. During this phase, the Chargers were under immense pressure. However, Pragyan Ojha dismissed both Hayden and Dhoni in a single over and the score read 103 for 4. He bowled brilliantly and in his first 2 overs had figures of 2 for 11. At the end of 15 overs, the Kings reached 113. Further, Jacob Oram continued Hayden’s style of play. Debutant Shoiab Ahmed had just bowled 2 economical overs, but Oram slogged 2 huge sixes off his bowling. In the 18th over, 20 runs were scored. At the end, Oram remained unbeaten on 41.
