Sanjay Bangar and Aakash Chopra have been sent back home from the Kolkata Knight Riders team in the second edition of the Indian Premier League. This has been done in order to trim the squad to manageable proportions and because âthey donât fit into the teamâs scheme of things for the second edition of the Indian Premier Leagueâ
The decision, according to the sideâs CEO, Joy Bhattacharya, was taken after a meeting with the duo and although they two werenât very happy with the decision, they had accepted it.
The CEO said, âThey are two very good senior international players so (coach) John Buchanan [Images] and the team management thought that if they are not going to have the opportunity (to play) it is unfair to keep them aroundâ >
Bhattacharya also said that the duo had taken the decision in the right spirit.
He added that this doesnât mean that they wont be playing in the third season of the IPL because they had a three-year contract with the franchise.
The CEO confirmed that they wonât be trimming down the side further. He said, âRight now we are down to 11 Indians and seven of them need to play so we donât think we will trim itâ
My take on issue: If Aakash Chopraâs selection in the previous sense had made no sense in this format of the game, it was Sanjay Bangar this time. Bangar had played for Deccan Chargers in the previous season, and not performed well enough. In fact the Chargers had then sacked him and he was selected by the Knight Riders!
I wonder whether it was Sourav Ganguly who got the duo in; especially given that it was under Gangulyâs captaincy for India, that both had opened the inning for India in tests as well!
Anyway, the two looked absolutely out of depth for this format and the right decision seems to have been taken by the team management; albeit something that coule have been totally avoided in the first place.
