BCCI approach

The Indian Board has permitted Sachin Tendulkar to participate in this match. This has been a difficult decision for the Indian Board as Tendulkar would play along with Hamish Marshall, who took part in the unauthorized ICL in the previous year. The Indian team’s manager in New Zealand, Niranjan Shah disclosed that any Indian cricketer would not be allowed to play any team that has even a single ICL player. Shah added that since Marshall is not an ICL player at the moment, the presence of Marshall in the Masters game is no longer a hurdle for Tendulkar’s inclusion. This issue is very grave as the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has prohibited official contact with ICL players. In fact, in the previous year, VVS Laxman was not permitted to play for Nottinghamshire as this county had some ICL players in their roster. Dinesh Karthik is included in the roster of ACA Masters.

The chief executive of NZCPA, Heath Mills explained the approach of New Zealand in this matter. He said that ICL players are permitted to take part in New Zealand domestic cricket. Marshall, who in the previous year represented Royal Bengal Tigers in the ICL, is a part of the NZCPA team. Mills remarked that Marshall had completed his contract in the ICL during the previous year and currently is not an ICL-contracted cricketer.
