Australia was placed in Group B along with India, West Indies and Zimbabwe. It lost its first two group matches and won the third group match. West Indies and India participated in the final which was eventually won by India.
Group match against Zimbabwe
On 16th June 1983, Australia and Zimbabwe played a group match at County Ground, Southampton. Australia batted first and amassed 272 runs in 60 overs for 7 wickets. The top scorer was Graeme Wood, who made 73 runs in 121 balls. John Traicos took 2 wickets in 12 overs while giving away 28 runs. In 59.5 overs, Zimbabwe was all out for 240. Group match against West Indies
Australia played its fifth group match at Lord’s, London on 18th June 1983 and the opponent was West Indies. This turned out to be a high scoring match in which Australia posted 273 runs for 6 wickets in 60 overs. Their top scorer was Kim Hughes who faced 124 deliveries and hit 69 runs. Malcolm Marshall made 2 dismissals in 12 overs while giving away 36 runs. West Indies replied by scoring 276 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 57.5 overs. The main contributor was Vivian Richards who remained unbeaten on 95 after facing 117 balls. Rodney Hogg took 1 wicket while conceding 25 runs in 12 overs. Richards was honored as the Man of the Match. West Indies won this match by 7 wickets. 
Group match against India
The last group match of Australia was against India. The venue for this match was the County Ground in Chelmsford. This match was played on 20th June 1983. Yashpal Sharma hit 40 runs in as many balls as India was bowled out for 247 in 55.5 overs. Rodney Hogg took 3 wickets in 12 overs while giving away 40 runs. In 38.2 overs, Australia was bowled out for 129. Allan Border was their top scorer. He faced 49 deliveries and scored 36 runs. Madan Lal bowled 8.2 overs, conceded 20 runs and took 4 wickets. India won this match by 118 runs. 
Out of the six group matches, Australia had won 2 matches, while it had to face defeat in 4 matches. It had collected 8 points and was ranked third in Group B. So, it could not progress to the semi-final and exited from the championship.
