In the 1983 Cricket World Cup, 8 nations were divided into 2 groups. Group A was made up of Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Pakistan and England. Australia was placed in Group B along with India, West Indies and Zimbabwe. It lost its first two group matches and won the third group match. West Indies and India participated in the final which was eventually won by India.

Group match against Zimbabwe

On 16th June 1983, Australia and Zimbabwe played a group match at County Ground, Southampton. Australia batted first and amassed 272 runs in 60 overs for 7 wickets. Australia played its fifth group match at Lord’s, London on 18th June 1983 and the opponent was West Indies. The last group match of Australia was against India. The venue for this match was the County Ground in Chelmsford. This match was played on 20th June 1983. Yashpal Sharma hit 40 runs in as many balls as India was bowled out for 247 in 55.5 overs. Rodney Hogg took 3 wickets in 12 overs while giving away 40 runs.
