Maxwell joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore from the Punjab Kings this season and has started with a bang for his new franchise, scoring a match-winning 59 from 41 balls.
The Australian middle-order batsman’s knock helped RCB reach 8-149 after being 6-109 in the 17th over, with five fours and three sixes.
David Warner made a half-century for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in reply but they fell short as Shabhaz Ahmed took three wickets, holding his nerve when 16 was needed off his final over.
Maxwell said post-game: “Kohli’s good at keeping me on task. Having those guys behind me is a nice little luxury.
“It’s my fourth IPL team and there’s pressure on me to turn up and make my impact. I’m planning to get my chance at bowling, but Washington Sundar is a superstar.”
Kohli added that he felt the wicket was tough for batting and was delighted with Maxwell’s contribution, having made 98 runs in his first two games.
“I truly believed we could win with 150. The wicket was never a belter and tonight our execution under pressure was spot-on,” Kohli said.
“The wicket kept getting tougher and tougher with the old ball. It’s about getting momentum in the first six overs, but for us Maxi gave us that momentum and got us closer to 150.
“To be very honest, we’re not over-excited with victories. We have a clear plan and backing our players. Got Harshal from Delhi for a role. It’s a long tournament and you have to be professional with your job.”
The result means RCB have two wins from two matches, while the Sunrisers are winless from their opening two games.
