Glenn Maxwell smashed 70 at a strike rate of more than 200, Aaron Finch re-discovered his form and Ashton Agar took a six-wicket haul as Australia emphatically hit back in their T20 International series against New Zealand.

Australia defeated New Zealand by 64 runs in the third T20I of the series in Wellington, to pull it back to 2-1 after being humbled in the opening two matches.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first, offering Australia a chance to set the bar for the first time this series and they capitalised with a massive score of 4-208.

It was led by Finch who ended his barren run with 69 from 44 balls, while he combined well with Josh Philippe (43 from 27), before Maxwell took over with a stunning 31-ball knock of 70.

The Black Caps responded at a rapid rate with the bat, but lost wickets regularly with Agar devastating their middle order as they slumped from 3-109 after 12 overs to be all out for 144.

Agar, who had been under pressure to hold his spot, finished with 6-30 from four overs, while debutant Riley Meredith claimed 2-24 in a game where everything went right for the Aussies.

“It’s nice when you contribute to a win. I suppose that partnership with Maxi allowed us to go deeper,” Finch said.

“When you get wickets in the powerplay and having the rate at 10 and a half and 11 already, they had to take risks, you squeeze them and that was the difference tonight.

“Everyone is bloody excited to see Riley. We knew that we weren’t too far off in the last game, we were pretty close in the first.

“We’re a young team but that’s not an excuse, we come here to win. To be 2-1 is OK, we’re still alive.”

NZ skipper Kane Williamson added: “I thought Australia played outstandingly well. the momentum they got with the bat, we ended up defending a lot of the time.

“When you get 210 it’s always a pretty healthy total. At the same time it was a very good surface. We managed a reasonable start but we lost wickets, which doesn’t help.”
