It is the second year the Road Traffic World series has been held in India, although the inaugural competition in 2020 had to be abandoned after just four games because of the onset of the global pandemic.
Road safety is a particularly pertinent issue in India which has the worst record of any nation in the world when it comes to accidents on its roads. In 2018, nearly 150,000 people were killed on Indias roads, which is more than 11% of the global total that is despite the fact that India accounts for just 2% of the worlds motor vehicles.
The aim of the tournament apart from its entertainment value is to try and influence and change peoples attitudes and behaviours towards road safety and create greater awareness of the issue.
The teams are India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the West indies, with new for this year, England and Bangladesh also being represented. The latter two replace Australia who were part of the inaugural event but have dropped out in 2021.
Among the retired stars who will be taking part are Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh for the host nation, Brian Lara for the West Indies, Kevin Pieterson for England, and Sanath Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka.
Teams will each play three matches on a league basis, with the top four then advancing to the semi-finals.
The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket stadium in Raipur will host every single match of this competition. Organisers of the tournament have indicated that because of continued coronavirus measures, the stadium, which can accommodate up to 65,000 people will be open to a maximum capacity of 50%.
The tournament begins on March 5th with India Legends playing Bangladesh. The home side will them play England on March 9th, and South Africa four days later.
