Indian off-break spinner Ravichandran Ashwin set a unique record on Tuesday.

And that takes him clear of the all-time mark set by the legendary Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan.

The wicket of Hazlewood brought an end to the Australian innings, with the hosts bowled out for exactly 200 in their second innings. That meant India needed 70 to win, which they managed for the loss of just two wickets.

It was an ideal way to bounce back after the humiliation of the First Test in Adelaide where India were bowled out for just 36, and was achieved without their best player and captain, Virat Kohli, who is back in India on paternity leave.

Ashwins five wickets in the match has taken his total haul in test cricket to 375, which is now fourth on the list of all-time Indian bowlers. Ahead of him and in his sights will be the record of Harbhajan Singh, who ended his career with 417 test wickets and Kapil Dev who took 434.

However, Anil Kumbles total of 619, the third highest of all-time by any bowler, looks safe, given that Ashwin is now 34 years old.

The ICC cricketer of the year in 2016, Ashwin made his test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and already owns a clutch of Indian records to his name he is the fastest man from that country to reach 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 test wickets.

254 of his wickets have come at home, with the remining 121 picked-up outside India.

In terms of success against left-handers, the only man still playing the game who could threaten Ashwins new record is Englands Jimmy Anderson who has 186 victims to his name, although he is nearer retirement than Ashwin, who will be looking to extend his new record even further when the Third Test begins in Sydney on January 7th..
