Langer: Australia Unchanged For Boxing Day Test

Australia are set to head into the Boxing Day Test against India with an unchanged line-up after their eight-wicket First Test win, according to coach Justin Langer.

The Australia coach spoke to the media on Christmas Eve ahead of the MCG Test match, with India reeling after being bowled out for 36 in the second innings of the opener and having seen captain Virat Kohli return home.

India’s issues have mounted too, with the loss of frontline quick Mohammed Shami for the series with a fractured arm.

While the tourists will likely make a raft of changes, the Aussies appear settled and Langer is reluctant to tinker with his line-up, particularly given David Warner and Will Pucovski aren’t yet fit and opener Joe Burns found some form in Adelaide.

“I’d be a pretty courageous man to change the XI for this Test match after the last one,” Langer said.

“At this stage, unless something happens over the next few days and things can happen in the world we live in we’ll go in with the same XI, I’d say.”

Two years ago, after Australia levelled the series 1-1 in Perth, India won at the MCG by 137 runs led by Cheteshwar Pujara’s century.

Langer insisted this current Australian team was very different and much improved.

“We’re a very different team. We have come a long way in two years,” Langer said.

“We are now playing very good cricket; we’ve got confidence. I also remember losing the toss at the MCG on a very, very, very, very flat wicket and that certainly took some of the wind out of our sails, that’s for sure.

“We’re a different team and we know that in first innings in Australia we are looking to score 400 in the first innings - there is no surprise there, that’s what we’ve based our best Test cricket on for years.

“When I said we have got areas where we can improve, that’s one I am talking about. We play our best cricket, as we saw all last summer, when we are scoring big first-innings totals, that’s what we aspire to and what we will be aspiring too in this game as well.”

The Second Test begins in Melbourne at 10:30am local time, with 30,000 fans expected to attend the annual event.
