Pakistan in the 1975 Cricket World Cup

The first edition of the Cricket World Cup took place in 1975 and it was also called as the Prudential Cup.

The first edition of the Cricket World Cup took place in 1975 and it was also called as the Prudential Cup. Pakistan was one of the eight teams that contested this championship. The captain of Pakistan was Asif Iqbal or Majid Khan. The teams were divided into 2 groups. Group A consisted of England, India, New Zealand and East Africa. Group B consisted of West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka. After the group matches were played, the top two teams from each group were selected for the semi final. The winners of the semi finals were West Indies and Australia and these played in the final. The final was won by the West Indies.

Group match against Australia

The first group match of Pakistan was against Australia on 7th June 1975 at Headingly Stadium in Leeds. The umpires for this match were TW Spencer and WE Alley. Australia won the toss and decided to bat. In 60 overs, Australia scored 278 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Alan Turner scored 46, Greg Chappell scored 45 while Ross Edwards was unbeaten on 80. Naseer Malik took 2 wickets for 37 runs in 12 overs. Pakistan was all out for 205 in 53 overs. Majid Khan scored 65, Asif Iqbal scored 53 while Wasim Raja scored 31. Dennis Lillee took 5 wickets for 34 runs and this was the 1st 5 wicket haul by any bowler in One day Internationals and hence he was selected as Man of the Match. Group match against West Indies

The second group match of Pakistan was against West Indies on 11th June 1975 at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. The umpires for this match were JG Langridge and DJ Constant. Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat. The team scored 266 for the loss of 7 wickets in 60 overs. Majid Khan scored 60, Zaheer Abbas scored 31, Wasim Raja chipped in 58 and Mushtaq Mohammad contributed 55. The West Indies scored 267 for 9 in 59.4 overs. Clive Lloyd scored 53, Deryck Murray was unbeaten on 61 and Andy Roberts was unbeaten on 24. Roberts and Murray had a partnership of 64 runs for the 10th wicket. Sarfraz Nawaz took 4 wickets for 44 runs in 12 overs and hence was declared as Man of the Match. West Indies won the match by 1 wicket. Sarfraz Nawaz>

Group match against Sri Lanka

The third group match of Pakistan was against Sri Lanka on 14th June 1975 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The umpires for this match were TW Spencer and A Jepson. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to field. Pakistan scored 330 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 60 overs. Sadiq Mohammad scored 74, Majid Khan scored 84 while Zaheer Abbas contributed 97. Bandula Warnapura took 3 wickets for 42 runs in 8 overs. Sri Lanka was all out for 138 in 50.1 overs. Anura Tennekoon scored 30. Imran Khan took 3 wickets for 15 runs in 7.1 overs. Pakistan won 1 group match and lost 2 matches and hence was given 4 points. It could not qualify for the semi finals and had to exit from the tournament.
