Warner left the field during Australia’s bowling innings in Sunday’s 51-run One Day International win over India with a groin strain, heading off immediately for scans.
Cricket Australia have been tight-lipped on the result of the scans and the extent of the injury since, despite ruling Warner out of the rest of the white ball series against India, which includes three T20Is still to be played.
But Langer spoke to SEN’s Sportsday WA on Monday night and revealed that in likelihood Warner will miss the First Test which starts in Adelaide on December 17.
“He’s strained his abductor in his groins and they tell me it’s a very painful injury,” Langer said.
“It looked like he got shot by a gun. He was in incredible pain in the changerooms after.
“I’m not holding my breath that he’ll be ready for the first Test match, but with that said he’s the sort of elite professional who will be doing literally everything possible to be ready for it.
“We’ll see what happens, but he’s going to be a loss that’s for sure.”
Will Pucovski appears Warner’s likely replacement for the First Test, having mounted a remarkable case for selection after back-to-back double hundreds in the Sheffield Shield.
Australia and India will do battle again in another ODI on Wednesday, with the hosts already having wrapped up the series 2-0.
Langer didn’t give much away about the third ODI, with speculation mounting about who’ll replace Warner at the top of the order, namely Marnus Labuschagne or Matthew Wade.
Australia may also hand a debut to emerging youngster Cam Green, given the match is a dead rubber.
Captain Aaron Finch said: “We haven’t picked a team yet, but we’ve got a few options. Whether we go Wadey in the side or Marnus comes up and opens the batting, Alex Carey has done a lot of it in the past.”
