Warner left the field midway through Australia’s bowling innings, straining his groin as he moved to his left to field the ball after earlier making 83 from 77 as the hosts amassed 4-389 after captain Aaron Finch won the toss.
India were always behind the eight ball in reply and eventually finished up at 9-338 with captain Virat Kohli top scoring with 89, while Pat Cummins took 3-67 for the Aussies.
But Warner’s injury was a big talking point, immediately requiring help to leave the field and being shuttled away to a medical imaging centre for scans on his groin.
The injury puts Warner’s place in the rest of the ODI and T20I series in jeopardy, along with his availability for the Test series which starts in Adelaide on December 17.
Speaking after the game, Finch was asked about Warner’s condition and Australia’s options to replace him in the white ball series. He said: “We’ve got to re-shuffle it around. I don’t think he’ll be available.”
The Australians were delighted with the win despite Warner’s loss, sealing back-to-back victories and an unassailable 2-0 ODI series lead after another score beyond 350.
Steve Smith led the way with another quickfire century, coming from 62 balls this time, before being dismissed for 104 from 64 deliveries.
“I think it’s summing up the conditions and what’s in front of you (was critical),” Smith said. “In the last two games the boys have got us off to terrific starts. Against India, they’re a terrific batting side so we need to get big totals.”
The defeated Kohli said his side were “completely outplayed”.
“With the ball ,we were not that effective,” the India skipper said. “They’ve got a pretty strong batting line-up and they understand the fields and the pitch pretty well. The chase always felt a bit too steep.”
