South Africa play host to England in three T20Is from November 27 to December 1, before another three One Day Internationals from December 4 to December 9.
The tourists head into the opening T20I as the favourites having beaten Australia 2-1 in September, with a side stacked with talent that has Morgan scratching his head on their best make-up.
Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan have been exceptional with the bat in T20 cricket at the top of the order, while Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Jason Roy, Morgan himself and the returning Ben Stokes are other batting options. Tom Banton hasn’t even made the squad.
Jofra Archer will lead the attack after a superb Indian Premier League, while there’s also quicks Chris Jordan, Mark Wood plus all-round types Tom Curran and Sam Curran and spinner Adil Rashid. Left-armer Reece Topley has been included too.
“The honest answer is we don’t know our best XI yet,” Morgan said.
“There are probably seven or eight guys who are pretty strong candidates to be in our playing XI, but the strength of the squad that we’ve selected, and the reserves that we have here, has made our full-strength side available for selection for the first time in a long time. That makes it very exciting.
“Winning at the moment would be great, but the process of going through what’s best for our team and best for our players, to try and beat the opposition is extremely important.
“Given the luxury of players that we have at our disposal, it’s more important that we get their roles right and they feel comfortable within that, because if we manage to solve that problem, the results will look after themselves.”
South Africa’s line-up is full of quality, including quicks Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje who played a key role in leading Delhi Capitals to the 2020 IPL Final.
Another in-form player is captain Quinton de Kock who starred for eventual winners Mumbai Indians, while the depth of former Proteas sides doesn’t appear there at the moment as they go through a transitory phase.
Its a fresh start,” de Kock said ahead of South Africa’s first home series in a year. “The guys are keen to play. Its been a while since weve played for the Proteas.
“The guys are keen to change what has been going on around cricket. Were the leaders and well try to lead from the front. The guys are keen to get going.”
