India appeared in control throughout the match. The team had completed considerable work in four days and on the fifth morning, they were not required to wait even for the completion of the first session to seal victory over Australia. The margin of victory was of 320 runs, which is the largest margin of victory for India in terms of runs. After commencement of play on the fifth day, Zaheer Khan uprooted three wickets in a space of four deliveries. Michael Clarke was the singular Australian batsman who stuck to the wicket with 69 runs. It always appeared a matter of time when India would take a lead of 1-0 in the series. This match became the largest loss of Australia to India after the Melbourne defeat in 1977.

Zaheer’s spell

On the fourth day, Australia was reduced to 58 for 5, however India waited for 84 runs before they struck again.
