Archer Error Could Have Lost ECB Millions

England pace bowler Jofra Archers ill-advised decision to return to his Brighton home after he played in the First Test against Southampton earlier this week, could have potentially cost the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) millions in lost revenue.

And, as he stares at the walls of his hotel room in Manchester over the next few days, the 25-year old will have plenty of time to reflect on what he has done, knowing that not only has it cost him a place in the team for the second match in the series at Old Trafford, but it could also affect his immediate international future as well.

The ECB have already announced that they are going to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the player who became an overnight national hero after bowling the Super Over against New Zealand in last years World Cup final.

In order to ensure that test cricket could resume in England this summer, albeit behind closed doors and in the absence of fans, the ECB has spent large sums of money creating a bio-secure bubble in which the teams are meant to stay, effectively isolated from the local population.

Archers trip effectively broke the bubble and raised the possibility that he could have been infected with the disease and then carried it back with him to the camp.

That, in turn, could potentially have threatened not only the rest of the current series with the West indies, but the rest of the summer programme as well. England are still hoping to play Pakistan in a test series and welcome Australia for one day internationals at the end of next month.

The financial implications if those matches were to be called-off would be considerable, although some have felt that publicly blaming a young man for an act of folly rather than ill-will is going too far.

Nevertheless, he will have plenty of time to reflect on what happened now. Not only must he spend five days in self-isolation, but he is also required to return negative results from two Covid-19 tests before he will be allowed to join his teammates again.
