Former ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year and fast bowler Jhulan Goswami has been named as the captain of the Indian Women’s cricket team for the upcoming one day series against current world champions Australia.

Goswami will be taking over the captaincy from Mithali Raj following the Indian team’s humiliating loss of 0-4 against the England Women’s team. Mithali Raj along with Jaya Sharma were dropped from the Women’s Challengers Tournament by the selectors which include former cricketer Anju Jain. Other team changes included the return of All-rounder Rumeli Dhar after her injury. The selectors will pick the team that will tour Australia for a 5 match one day series and a Twenty20 match to be played in October and November based on the performances seen during the Tournament to be played between the India Women’s A, India Women’s B and the Senior team. The tour will hopefully prepare the teams for the ICC Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Australia next year.

The hopefuls

Nooshin Al Khadeer, who played for the India Women’s A team and is just four wickets away from crossing 100 ODI wickets said that she was looking forward to get selected and play against Australia. She said, “They have very talented young bowlers like Ellyse Perry and the Blackwell sisters are doing well with the bat as well. Last time we toured Australia, we lost the Test and ODI series and after this year’s defeat in England, everyone has to prove their place in the squad”

The Senior team

The Indian senior women’s team includes Jhulan Goswami, Monica Sumra, Anagha Deshpande, Asha Rawat, Seema Pujare, Priyanka Roy, Gauhar Sultan, Shweta Jadhav, Apurva Kokil, V.R.Vanitha, Lalita Sharma, Anureet Kaur and Swaroopa Kadam.
