More than 86,000 fans turned out as Australia produced their performance of the tournament to destroy an Indian side who had beaten the hosts during the group stage.
Australia’s flawless display and feat was all the more impressive, given they had to play without star all-rounder Ellyse Perry who suffered a tournament-ending hamstring injury in the final group game against New Zealand last week.
Wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, who entered the World Cup out of form, was named Player of the Match in the final after a swashbuckling 75 from 39 balls set up the victory, along with a sharp catch to dismiss India opener Shafali Verma.
Fellow opener Beth Mooney was excellent alongside Healy, and arguably unlucky not to win the gong, with her unbeaten 78* from 54 deliveries, along with two clutch catches in the field.
Australia amassed 4-184 from their 20 overs, buoyed by Healy and Mooney’s opening partnership of 115 inside 12 overs.
The hosts looked set for a total beyond 200 at one point but India stemmed the flow of runs with wickets late in the innings to take some momentum in their batting innings.
However, Megan Schutt dismissed Shafali third ball and wickets fell in quick succession after that, as India never got going in the chase.
Schutt finished with 4-18 from 3.1 overs, including taking the final wicket, while Jess Jonassen took 3-20 from her four overs, with all 10 Indian batters dismissed caught.
Australia skipper Meg Lanning said: “To put our best performance on the park on the biggest stage in our careers is certainly something I’m very proud of.
“We came into this tournament to win, no doubt about that and as soon as there was 90,000 people expected on the ‘G, we were hoping to be there and just to get here, I think was a significant achievement.”
