Steve Smith insists he has no desire to resume his captaincy of Australia when his two-year ban ends at the end of March.

Smith lost the Australian captaincy following the ball tampering scandal during Australia’s last tour of South Africa in early 2018, returning to the side as a batsman last year.

Speaking in South Africa during Australia’s current visit, the 30-year-old made it clear he had no intentions to re-claim his former role which is currently occupied by Tim Paine at Test level and Aaron Finch in white ball cricket.

“Not really,” Smith replied when asked if he considering the captaincy. “I’m pretty chilled to be honest.

“I’m just enjoying playing and being amongst the boys.

“It’s been really good. The guys are doing a terrific job, Finchy and Painey.

“I’ll support them any way I can and help the team have some success.

“Hopefully score some more runs and help the team that way.”

Smith top scored with 76 from 94 balls in Australia’s opening ODI defeat to the Proteas by 74 runs in Paarl on Saturday.

Australia last week won the three-game T20I series 2-1 but need to bounce back in the 50-over series, with game two in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

The series comes more than six months after last year’s World Cup where Australia lost in the semi-finals and Smith said they wanted a series win to continue to build and gel as a group.

“It’s about gelling together and getting the right combinations and playing together as a side,” Smith said.

“After a world cup your’e always looking forward to the next one about what combinations work.

“We haven’t played our best one-day cricket for some time now. We’ve still got a lot of work to do in this format of the game.

“Saturday was a sloppy performance in all three aspects of the game. We’ve got some work to do to get back into this series.”
