Australian opener David Warner has backed James Pattinson in ahead of the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand with the Victorian quick to replace Josh Hazlewood in the XI at the MCG.

Hazlewood suffered a hamstring injury in Australia’s 296-run victory over the Black Caps in Perth, forcing the hosts into a change ahead of the Second Test starting on Thursday.

Pattinson hasn’t played in the baggy green since Australia’s remarkable Third Test Ashes loss to England at Headingley, Leeds.

Peter Siddle and Michael Neser were both in contention for Boxing Day but coach Justin Langer confirmed 29-year-old right-arm tearaway Pattinson has the nod.

“(He offers) just simple firepower,” Warner said.

“He is a fierce competitor. He’s got a lot of up and go about him, that’s what we love.

“He’s been like that since day one, even when he made his debut.

“He’s well spoken high of, especially the guys who have played against him in County cricket. He puts the ball in the right areas and on the right length.”

Pattinson was ruled out of the First Test against Pakistan earlier this summer, following a ban for a homophobic slur during the Sheffield Shield.

“He was gutted by that decision,” Warner said. “He knows he did the wrong things and he copped it on the chin.

“When you look at what he did for us in England as well. It’s all about being consistent and playing back-to-back games.

“His body has been right, and he’s happy with that. He’s chuffed to get back out there. Obviously being Boxing Day and his home crowd.”

Meanwhile, Warner was struck on the right hand in the MCG nets on Monday, leaving the session in pain and discomfort.

Cricket Australia moved to allay fears that the blow may impact Warner’s availability for the Boxing Day Test.
