West Indies beat Afghanistan by nine wickets in their Test match in Lucknow as Rakheem Cornwall grabbed a 10-fer with his brand of off-spin.

For their one-off test match in Lucknow, the West Indies won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first.

The Afghan opening pair of Ibrahim Zadran and Javed Ahmadi put on 28 for the first wicket, until Zadran was caught by Jason Holder off Rahkeem Cornwall for 17. Ahmadi and Ihsanullah added 56 but then Ahmadi was caught by Sharmarh Brooks off Jomel Warricam for 39, and Ihsanullah caught by Shai Hope for 24, with Cornwall again the bowler.

A mini-collapse then ensued. Rahmat Shah was caught by Hope off Cornwall, Nasir Jamal fell in the same way, and Asghar Afghan was caught behind. Cornwall then supplied the catch that helped dismiss Rashid Khan off the bowling of Holder. Afsar Zazai and Amir Hamza added 54, but Zazai was lbw to Cornwall for 32, and then Hamza was out for 34 to Holder, caught behind.

Last man out was Yamin Ahmadzai, caught by Warricam for 18, with Cornwall yet again the bowler. Afghanistan had been bowled out for 187 in the 69th over.

Cornwall finished with 7 for 75, and Holder 2 for 22.

In reply the West Indies lost Kraigg Braithwaite lbw to Amir Hamza for 11, and Shai Hope, caught by Ihsanullah off Rashid Khan for 7, but John Campbell and Sharmarh Brooks saw them through to stumps at 68 2; Campbell was 30 not out, and Brooks undefeated on 19.

The pair added a further 48 on the second morning, until Campbell was out for 55, caught by Ihsanullah off Hamza. Then Brooks and Shimron Hetmyer added 21, but Hetmyer was the next to go, lbw to Rashid Khan. Roston Chase fell cheaply to Zahir, but then Brooks and Shane Dowdrich shared a stand of 74 for the sixth wicket, before Dowdrich was lbw to Zahir for 42. Brooks and Holder then combined until Holder was stumped off Hamza.

Cornwall was lbw to Rashid, and then Brooks, who had reached his century, was out for 111, bowled by Hamza. Roach was last man out, lbw to Hamza, who ended up with figures of 5 for 74. The West Indies though finished their innings on 277, a lead on first innings of 90.

In their second innings Ibrahim Zadran and Ahmadi put on 53, before there was a flurry of wickets. Zadran was the first to go lbw to Cornwall for 23, and then Ihsanullah was run out by Hope. Cornwall then had both Shah and Asghar Afghan caught by Brooks. Ahmadzai and Hamza put on 37 for the fifth wicket, before Ahmadzai was bowled by Chase for 15. Then Chase had Hamza caught by Cornwall, before Ahmadi fell for 62 off the last ball of the day, Cornwall again supplying the catch.

Afghanistan closed the day on 109 7, a lead of just 19, with three second innings wickets still standing.

Their innings did not last much longer on the third morning. Rashid Khan was caught behind off Holder, and then Ahmadzai was bowled by the same man. Holder then claimed a third wicket as he had Zazai caught behind, as the home side were bowled out for 120.

Needing 31 to win, the West Indies lost Braithwaite to a delivery by Hamza, caught by Zazai, but Campbell and Hope guided them to victory with no further alarms.
