Manchester City had the first chance of the match when Raheem Stirling’s cutback found Barnardo Silva, whose shot was deflected around the post. However, they took the lead soon afterwards when a flowing move found the left found Kevin de Bruyne in the area, and his mis-kick found Sergio Aguero who poked home. David Silva shot straight at Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but then City then doubled their lead when Bernardo and David Silva combined before releasing the ball to Stirling who calmly scored.
Bournemouth had little to show for all their efforts, until City keeper Ederson made a fine save to keep out a shot from Adam Smith. They did though pull back a goal on the stroke of half-time, courtesy of a superb free-kick from Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson, on as a substitute for the injured Charlie Daniels.
In the second half Bournemouth came close to an equaliser when Ederson saved at the feet of Callum Wilson, but from the resultant counter-attack, City swept down the field and de Bruyne shot narrowly wide. However, City made the points safe midway through the half when David Silva dribbled into the area, and the ball fell to Aguero to slot the ball into the net. Thereafter, City just kept possession and Bournemouth were restricted to the occasional break.
Tottenham Hotspur surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Newcastle United.
Although they had all the early pressure, Tottenham failed to have any early shots on target, and they went behind in the 26th minute when Christian Atsu played the ball into the path of the Newcastle striker Joelinton, who was inexplicably left unmarked to score his first goal for the club. That prompted Spurs to mount continuous attacks on the Newcastle goal but they were too predictable in the lead-up to half-time, making it easy to defend against. Their best chance of the half came right on the whistle, when Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal could only push a cross out to Lucas Moura, but he screwed his shot wide.
The second-hall was more of the same. Incessant Tottenham pressure and resolute defence from Newcastle, although in truth there were few clear cut chances, the best of which fell to Moura who fired wide after a cross from Moussa Sissoko, with the goal at his mercy. At the other end, Miguel Almirón almost got a second for Newcastle after a fine run. In the end, Newcastle claimed their first win under new manager Steve Bruce, whilst Tottenham must prepare for the North London derby next weekend.
