Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 62 runs to boost their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

Afghanistan won the toss at the Rose Bowl in Southampton and opted to field first. Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal opened the batting, but Das fell early, caught at extra cover by Hashmatullah Shahidi for 16, with Mujeeb ur-Rahman the bowler. Tamim and Shakib Al-Hasan then added 59, but just as Tamim seemed all set, he was bowled by Mohammad Nabi for 36.

Shakib made his fifth half-century of the tournament, but he as bowled by Mujeeb for 51, who soon struck again to remove Soumya Sarkar lbw. That brought Mahmudullah to the crease and, although he was struggling with injury, he provided good support to Mushfiqur Rahim, who had taken over the main responsibility for scoring. Together the pair put on 56 for the 5th wicket, until Mahmudullah fell for 27, caught at mid-wicket by Nabi, with Gulbadin Naib the bowler.

Mosaddek Hossain then joined Mushfiqur, and the pair put on 44 for the sixth wicket in a late push for runs. Mushfiqur finally fell for 83, having hit one six, slicing Dawlat Zadran to Nabi fielding at extra cover. There was still time for Mosaddek to add a further 11 with Mohammad Saifuddin until he fell off the last ball of the innings for 35, bowled by Gulbadin, as Bangladesh posted a challenging total of 262 – 7.

Bangladesh made a solid start in reply, with Gulbadin and Rahmat Shah adding 49 for the opening wicket, until Rahmat somewhat needlessly hit Shakib Al Hasan to Tamim and was caught for 24.

Hashmatullah then came to the crease, but he struggled against the Bangladesh spinners, and was eventually stumped off Mosaddek for 11. With the Bangladeshi bowlers squeezing the run rate, the pressure finally told. First Gulbadin mis-timed a drive off Shakib and was caught by Das for 47. Then two balls later, Shakib clean bowled Nabi. Asghar Afghan made 20, but then he attempted an ugly swipe off Shakib and was caught at deep square leg.

Samiullah Shinwari and Najbullah Zadran gave their side hope with a stand of 56, but then Najbullah, who had made 23, gave Shakib a fifth wicket when he was stumped.

In the following over, Rashid Khan was caught by Mashrafe Mortaza, with Mustafizur Rahman the bowler, and he followed that yup by taking the wicket of Dawlat Zadran. Saifuddin was the last man out, bowled by Saifuddin, as Afghanistan were bowled out for exactly 200. Shinwari was 49 not out at the end, including one six, but his efforts were in vain in the end.

Shakib meanwhile, took 5 for 29.
