South Africa won the toss at the Oval and opted to bat first. However, Bangladesh got off to a good start with Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar put on 60 for the first wicket, until Tamim was caught behind off Andile Phehlukwayo for 16.
Then Soumya fell in the same way, with Chris Morris this time the bowler, for 42. However, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim then combined in a third wicket partnership of 142 for the third wicket, until Shakib, who had made 75, including one six, missed an attempted sweep shot to Imran Tahir and was bowled.
Next man to fall was Mohammad Mithun bowled by Tahir for 21, including a six. Then Mushfiqur, who had reached 78, was caught by Rassie van der Dussen off Phehlukwayo, having struck 8 fours.
Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain then put on 66 for the sixth wicket in a little under seven overs. Mosaddek eventually fell at the end of the 49th over for 21, caught by Phehlukwayo off Morris, but Mahmadullah and Mehedi Hasan added a further 14 off the last over, as Bangladesh reached their highest ever ODI score of 330 – 6, with Mahmadullah undefeated on 46.
In reply, Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram looked to give South Africa a strong start, until de Kock was run out by Mushfiqur for 23. Markram and Faf du Plessis put on 53, but then Markram was deceived by an arm ball from Shakib and was bowled for 45. Du Plessis and David Miller added 45, but then du Plessis, who had struck one six, was out top-scoring for his side with 62, bowled by Mehedi Hasan.
Miller and Rassie van der Dussen shared a stand of 55, before Miller was caught by Hasan, with Mustifizur the bowler, for 38. JP Duminy and van der Dussen then combined, but, with the asking rate steadily increasing, the South Africans were forced to start taking risks.
Van der Dussen was the next to fall, bowled by Mohammad Saifuddin for 45, and then Phehlukwayo was caught by Shakib off the same bowler. Morris and Duminy added 23, but Morris was caught by Soumya off Mustafizur, and then Duminy was bowled by the same man for 45. Rabada and Tahir added an unbeaten 22 but it was in vain as their side could only muster 309/8.
