Put into bat in Mumbai, Bangalore suffered the early loss of Virat Kohli, caught behind off Jason Behrendorff for just 8. Partiv Patel and AB de Villiers add 37, but then Patel, who had hit one six, fell to the bowling of Hardik Pandya for 28. De Villiers then combined in a stand of 95 with Moeen Ali, scored at nearly 10 runs an over, until Ali, who had hit 5 sixes, was caught by Hardik Pandya off Lasith Malinga, who also claimed the wicket of Marcus Stoinis for a duck.
De Villiers took his score to 75, including 4 sixes, before he was run out in the last over, with two more late wickets falling to Malinga who finished with 4 for 31. Bangalore closed on 171 – 7 from their 20 overs.
In response Mumbai got off to a quick fire start, with Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma adding 70 for the first wicket, until both fell to Moeen Ali in the same over, Rohit, who had hit 2 sixes, bowled for 28, and de Kock, also with 2 sixes to his name, lbw for 40. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar put on 33 before Kishan was stumped off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal for 21, who then went on to take the wicket of Yadav when he had made 21.
However, the two Pandyas, Krunal and Hardik added 19, and although Krunal fell in the 18th over to Mohammed Siraj, Hardik took responsibility and got the necessary runs to see his side home with an over to spare, finishing 37 not out, having struck 2 sixes.
Lasith Malinga was named man of the match.
Kings XI Punjab beat the Rajasthan Royals by 12 runs in Chandigarh.
Losing the toss and invited to bat first, Punjab looked to get off to a fast start through Chris Gayle and KL Rahul, but then Gayle, who had reached 30, including 3 sixes, was caught off the bowling of Jofra Archer. Mayank Agarwal then joined Rahul and he scored 26, until he was caught by Archer off Ish Sodhi, having struck 2 sixes of his own. Rahul then shared a stand of 85 for the third wicket with David Miller, before Rahul, who also had 2 sixes to his name, was out top scoring with 52, with Jaydev Unadkat the bowler.
Three wickets then fell in five balls – Nicholas Pooran and Mandeep Singh to Archer, and then Miller, out of the first ball of the last over for 40, to Dhawal Kulkarni. However, Ravighandran Ashwin smashed 17 off 4 balls, including 2 sixes, to help his side close on 182 – 6.
Jos Buttler and Rahul Tripathi looked to give their side a good platform but, after striking 2 sixes, Buttler was out for 23, caught by Pooran with Singh the bowler. Sanju Samson and Tripathi added 59 but, Samson then fell for 27, bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin. Tripathi then added 30 with Ajinkya Rahane, before wickets were lost at vital times. First to go was Tripathi, out to Ashwin (R) for 50, followed three balls later by Ashton Turner who fell to Murugan Ashwin. He was quickly followed by Archer, as Rajasthan began to stumble.
Rahane and Stuart Binny added 15, but the visitors were seriously behind the run rate by this time, and the loss of Rahane to Ashdeep Singh checked them further, with Shreyas Gopal the seventh man to fall to the bowling of Mohammed Shami in the final over. Binny was 33 not out at the end, having hit 3 sixes, but his team finished adrift of their target.
Ravichandran Ashwin was named man of the match for his contribution with the bat and ball.
