Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals recorded contrasting wins over the last couple of days in our IPL 2019 round-up.

The Kings XI Punjab beat the Delhi Capitals by 14 runs in Chandigarh.

Put into bat, Punjab lost opener KL Rahul at the end of the second over, lbw to Chris Morris for 15, and then fell opener Sam Curran to Sandeep Lamichhane for 20. Mayank Agarwal was run out for 6, but Sarfaraz Khan and David Miller put on 62 for the fourth wicket, until Khan fell to Lamichhane for 39.

Miller was the next to fall, out top scoring for 43 to Morris, having hit 2 sixes. Mandeep Singh hit 29 not out, but partners came and went, with Morris picking up another wicket, and Kagiso Rabada two, as well as a run out. In the end Kings closed on 166 -9, with Morris the pick of the Delhi bowlers with 3 for 30.

Delhi suffered an immediate blow in their reply, losing Prithvi Shaw off the first ball of the innings bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin. Shikhar Dhawan and his captain Shreyas Iyer looked to get things back on track with a stand of 61, before Iyer departed for 28, bowled by Hardus Viljoen. Dhawan was the next to fall lbw to Ashwin for 30, before a fine stand of 62 between Risbabh Pant and Colin Ingram helped put their side in control. However, Pant, having hit 2 sixes, fell to Mohammed Shami for 39, and then Morris was run out to further check the visitors’ progress.

At this point Curran exerted a big impact on proceedings. First he had Ingram, who had scored 38, caught, and then he accounted for Harshal Patel. In the next over, Harluma Vihari was bowled by Mohammed Shami, before Curran struck twice in successive balls, first bowling Kagiso Rabada, and then Lamicchane, as Delhi were dismissed for 152. Curran’s spell of bowling, which included a hat-trick spread over two overs, saw him take 4 for 11 in just 14 balls.

Sam Curran was named man of the match.

The Rajasthan Royals beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by seven wickets on Tuesday

Rajasthan won the toss in Jaipur, and invited Bangalore to bat first, who got off to a good start with Virat Kohli, promoted to the top of the order, and Prithvi Patel, putting on 49 for the first wicket. However, Shreyas Gopal struck, bowling Kohli for 23, and, after Patel and AB de Villiers had put on 22, the bowler took two more wickets, first having de Villiers caught and bowled,, and then Shimron Hetmyer caught behind.

Patel then added 53 with Marcus Stoinis, but, having reached 67, and hit one six, he was caught of the bowling of Shimron Archer. That left Stoinis and Moeen Ali to put on an undefeated 32, as the home side closed on 158 -4, with Stoinis 31 not out, and Ali undefeated on 18, both men having hit a six apiece.

Gopal was the best of the bowlers with 3 for 12.

In reply, Ajinkya Rahane and Jos Buttler got Rajasthan off to an even better start, the pair putting on 60 for the first wicket until Rahane was lbw to Yuzvendra Chahal for 22. Buttler then combined with Steve Smith, and the pair added 44, until Buttler, who had hit one six, was caught by Stoinis off Chahal for 59. Smith and Rahul Tripathi then shared a partnership of exactly 50, until Smith fell at the end of the 19th over for 38, caught off the bowling of Siraj. Stokes came in to join Tripathi, and he scored the one run that was needed to ease their side to victory, with one ball to spare. Tripathi was undefeated at the end on 34.
