England beat the West Indies by four wickets in their first T20I in St.

It was they who won the toss and invited the home side to bat, gaining early success when Shai Hope was caught by Joe Root at the start of the second over off the bowling of Tom Curran. Chris Gayle looked to repeat his heroics of the ODIs but, for once, he fell cheaply, caught by Adil Rashid off Chris Jordan for 15, and, when Shimron Hetmyer was caught by Liam Plunkett of Curran for 14 soon afterwards, the West Indies were 37 – 3.

However, Daren Bravo and Nicholas Pooran got the innings back on track with a stand of 68 for the 4th wicket, which was only ended when Bravo, who had reached 28, including 2 sixes, was superbly caught and bowled by Jordan. Carlos Braithwaite was caught off Rashid the next over for a duck, but Pooran and Fabian Allen added 25 before Allen was caught by Jordan off the bowling of Denly for 8.

Next to fall was Pooran himself, top-scoring with 58, including 4 sixes and 3 fours, bowled by Curran, who also took the last wicket to fall Jason Holder, falling off the last ball of the innings after sharing a 23 run partnership for the 8th wicket with Ashley Nurse.

The West Indies had reached 160 for 9 at the end of their twenty overs, with Curran the most successful of the English bowlers with 4 for 36.

England chased the total down with 7 balls to spare, aided by poor West Indian fielding. They got off to a fast start through Alex Hayles and Jonny Bairstow, and survived the loss of Alex Hayles for 11, and Root lbw for a duck, both victims of Sheldon Cottrell, as Bairstow led the way.

Eoin Morgan fell for 8, caught off the bowling of Braithwaite, until Bairstow combined with Joe Denly. Bairstow, who had been dropped twice, eventually fell to a catch in the deep by Braithwaite off Nurse for 68, featuring 2 sixes and 9 fours, but Denly then joined with Sam Billings, and the pair steered England close to the winning line. They both fell towards the end, Denly caught by Pooran off Holder for 30, and Billings giving Cottrell a third wicket for 18. However, David Willey and Curran scored the necessary runs to close out the match.

Bairstow’s knock earned him the man of the match award.
