Bangladesh named an unchanged side for the second match in the series, whilst New Zealand, who won the toss and opted to field first, brought in Todd Astle for Mitchell Santner.
Bangladesh were soon struggling, losing opener Liton Das in the 4th over, caught by Lockie Ferguson off Trent Boult, and then his partner Tamim Iqbal lbw to Matt Henry. Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim added 32, but Soumya was caught off the bowling of Colin de Grandhomme, and Mushfiqur, who went on to make 24, was lbw to Ferguson. When Mahmudullah was caught behind off Astle, the visitors were struggling on 93 – 5.
Mohammad Mithun and Sabbir Rahman showed some fight, at least, with a stand of 75, before Mithun, who had hit a six and 7 fours in reaching 57, was bowled by Astle. Mehedi Hasan scored 20, but was caught by Henry Nicholls off Jimmy Neesham, and then Sabbir, the last recognised batsman, was caught by Neesham off Ferguson for 43. Mohammad Saifuddin was bowled by Ferguson for 10, with the last man to fall being captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who was caught by Boult off Ferguson for 13.
Bangladesh had been bowled out for 226, with two balls of their innings yet to be bowled. Ferguson was the best of the Kiwi bowlers with 3 for 43, whilst Neesham and Astle both claimed two wickets apiece.
New Zealand looked to get off to a fast start, but were checked when Henry Nicholls was caught by Das off the bowling of Mustafizur Rahman for 14. However, Guptill had already shown he was in superb form and, together with his captain Kane Williamson, put on 133 for the second wicket in just 21 overs. With Williamson very much in the supporting role, Guptill went on the attack, hitting 4 sixes and 14 fours in his 118, before falling to the Das-Mustafizur catcher-bowler combination. It was his 15th ODI century, and his second in succession.
Williamson and Taylor then shared an unbeaten partnership of 41 as New Zealand cruised to victory with more than 13 overs to spare, with Williamson unbeaten on 65, and Taylor 21 not out.
Yet again the man of the match adjudicator had the easiest decision to make and handed the cheque to Guptill.
