Australia named an unchanged side for the match, whilst India brought in Mohammed Siraj for Khaleel Ahmed.
It was the home side who won the toss in Adelaide and decided to bat first but, they initially struggled to get runs on the board, and lost both openers in successive overs, Aaron Finch bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 6, and Alex Carey caught by Shikhar Dhawan off Mohammed Shami for 18.
And then Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh then added 56 before Khawaja was run out by Ravindra Jadeja for 20.
However Marsh, dropped from the test side, played like a man with a point to prove, and provided his team with the impetus their innings needed. First he shared a stand of 52 with Peter Handscomb and then, when Handscomb was stumped by MS Dhoni for 20 off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja, added 55 for the 5th wicket with Marcus Stoinis.
Shami had Stoinis caught behind for 29, but Marsh and Glenn Maxwell then added 94 at nine runs an over, before both fell in the same over to Kumar. Maxwell, who had hit a six and 5 fours, was out for 48, whilst Marsh was dismissed for 131, which included 3 sixes and 11 fours. It was his sixth ODI century. The tail then added 15 more as the Australian innings closed on 298 – 9.
In reply, India got off to a fast start with Dhawan and Rohit Sharma putting on 47 for the first wicket before Dhawan was caught by Khawaja off the bowling of Jason Behrendorff for 32. Rohit and his captain then added 54 before Rohit was the next to fall, caught by Handscomb off Stoinis for 43.
Kohli then joined forces with Ambati Rayudu and the pair shared a stand of 59 for the third wicket before Rayudu was caught by Stoinis for 24, Maxwell this time the bowler. That brought Dhoni to the crease, and, together with his skipper, the pair added 82, as Kohli scored his 39th ODI century, before falling to Jhye Richardson for 104, his innings including 2 sixes and 5 fours.
When Dinesh Karthik joined Dhoni at the crease, there was still a lot to do, with 57 required off six overs and a bit, but the pair judged the run chase ideally, taking singles where they could, and hitting the bad ball for a boundary. They reached their target in the last over, with Dhoni finishing on 55 not out, which included 2 sixes. Karthik was 25 not out, including 2 fours.
Kohli claimed the man of the match award yet again.
