Chennai Super Kings Clinch IPL 2018

A superlative innings of 117 not out from Australia’s Shane Watson completed a fairy-tale return to the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings, as they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in Mumbai, to win their third IPL crown and their first since 2011.

Put into bat, Sunrisers lost Shreevats Goswami early, but Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson put on 51 for the second wicket before Dhawan fell for 26. Williamson and Shakib Al-Hasan then added 37 before Williamson was out for 47. His innings took him past the 700 run mark for the series, only the third player to achieve that feat in IPL history, and was enough to earn him the Orange Cap as the top run-scorer in the 2018 IPL, with 735 runs. Shakib and Yusuf Pathan then pushed the score along before Shakib was out for 23. Deepak Hooda went cheaply, but then Carlos Braithwaite joined Pathan and the pair mounted a late assault on the Chennai bowlers, scoring 34 off the last three overs. Braithwaite was the last man out for 21, having hit 3 sixes, whilst Pathan was undefeated on 45, as Hyderabad posted a fairly imposing 178 – 6.

The Chennai reply got off to a slow start, with Watson and his opening partner, Faf du Plessis, struggling to score against some tight bowling. Du Plessis fell for 10 at the end of the fourth over, but with Suresh Raina joining him at the crease, Watson began to settle and find his range. With Raina content to play second fiddle, the opener opened his shoulders, hitting the hapless Sardeep Sharma for three consecutive sixes and two boundaries in a single over. Raina was out shortly afterwards for 32, but Ambati Rayudu joined the Australian in the middle, as Chennai powered to their target with 9 balls to spare.

Rayudu was 16 not out but all the plaudits went to man of the match Watson, whose 117 came off 57 balls, and included 8 sixes and 11 fours. It was his second IPL of the season and his fourth in total, but none have been as valuable for his side.

Finally, another Australian, Andrew Tye of Kings XI Punjab won the Purple Cap for picking up the most wickets this season (24).
