South Africa v Sri Lanka 1st ODI preview & live at St. George's Park

Sri Lanka begin the final leg of their tour to South Africa on Saturday, when they face the hosts in the first of five ODIs at St.

The Proteas were 3-0 winners of the Test series, and began the T20I series with a victory, before the tourists staged a comeback to take the final two fixtures in the shortest format of the game, and claim that series by 2-1.

Both sides will now be looking towards the Champions Trophy, to be played in England during the Summer, and the forthcoming series are an important part of their preparations towards that competition.

The Proteas completed a stunning 5-0 whitewash of the top ranked Australians before Christmas, and will hope to continue that form and momentum, especially as a number of star players who were rested for the T20Is return to the fray.

In all, South Africa have won five of their last six ODI series that they have played, including a 3-2 success in India, although they performed poorly in the Caribbean last year during the tri-series with the West Indies and Australia.

AB de Villiers, who made his international comeback with a half-century in the third T20I, returns to lead the team in the ODI’s, while Lungi Ngidi is also named in the squad on the back of some fine efforts during the T20I’s.

Sri Lanka’s most recent effort in ODI’s in November, saw them win a tri-series in Zimbabwe against the hosts and the West Indies. Prior to that last year, they had been defeated on home soil by Australia 1-4, and in England 0-3.

The tourists will be led by Upul Tharanga in the absence of regular skipper Angelo Mathews, who returned home for personal reasons ahead of the final T20I, but is suffering with a hamstring injury in any case.
