Stick and Move

Stick and Move is a phrase used in boxing to describe a technique where the boxer is planting his foot while releasing a powerful [jab][1] and moving to either counterattack or avoid his opponent. This technique is one of the most basic techniques a boxer should know because this is where they will learn the fundamentals of adjusting and becoming more flexible in the ring.

How to Do the Stick and Move Technique

Since "Stick and Move" is a basic technique, coaches and trainers have to position themselves on the ringside, so the boxer could learn to improve their foot movement while jabbing. To do the Stick and Move technique means taking small steps while moving the boxer's upper body.

The boxer also has to use this technique outside using the jab and use his foot movement to lure in the opponent. As the boxer attracts his opponent nearer to him, he should give his full arm extension for the [punches][2]. Therefore, the boxer should also possess speed and length while executing this technique. Waiting for the timing is also important because when delivered correctly at the right time, this will create a powerful shot against the opponent.

The Paradox of the Technique

Muhammad Ali once said to "Float like a boxer and sting like a bee" to emphasize that punches with unnecessary movements are not powerful as it seemed. Even though that this is a basic technique, still the balance that should be delivered is also hard to achieve, especially some boxers couldn't help to move their lower body while delivering a punch against the opponent.
