Tonya Harding
Born on November 12, 1970, Tonya Maxene Harding is a professional figure skater who won the 1991 Figure Skating Championships and placed second in the World Championships. She later gained fame as a boxer. She grew up in Portland, Oregon and started skating at the age of three. Under the coaching of Ice Capades star Diane Rawlinson Harding won her first competition at the age of 5. She did her first triple jump at the age of 8 and her first triple lutz at the age of 12.
One of her greatest achievements was winning the National Title at the Target Center in Minneapolis. It was during this competition that she received a score of 6.0 for technical merit, becoming the first woman to receive these score in two decades.
In 1994 she also competed at the Nationals, winning first place, and soon after she was off to her second Olympics, finishing at 8th place, with the first place won by rival Nancy Kerrigan. It was later found out that Harding’s ex husband hired someone to club Kerrigan on the knee prior to her performance. Harding was implicated and was subsequently banned from competing in the sport for life. She later boxed on the show Celebrity Boxing against Paula Jones, which she won. She made her pro debut on February 22, 2003, losing the fight after four rounds. After winning several bouts she was again defeated in 2004 by Amy Johnson in a fight held in Edmonton, Canada. Her total boxing record stands at 3-3-0.
