Melissa Del Valle
Melissa Del Valle is a female professional boxer who has won fights in both professional and amateur levels. She was born on June 2, 1969 in New York City, United States into a Puerto Rican family that is known to be very sports-minded.
She fought as Melissa Salamone, which was her married name. She then went on to win the Golden Gloves of New York while fighting at 132 pounds for 1996 and 1997. In 1997, she even won the National Amateur lightweight title to her collection of honors. In fact, she swept all five scorecards during the finals that were held in July 19, 1997.
In 1998, Del Valle went on to win a 10-round match via unanimous decision, defeating Melinda Robinson, enabling her to claim the WBF super featherweight title, which was then unoccupied.
Eleven months after the said fight, she was able to win six bouts that did not involve the title she earned. On August 14, 1999, she defended her title against Lena Akesson, who was also unbeaten – much like herself. Despite having great bruises and a cut over one of her eyes, Del Valle rallied quite great, except that it was too late to recover. She lost via unanimous decision.
Del Valle has a record of 28 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses, and 11 wins via knockout. She is also the subject of many boxing trivia questions since she and her brother are the only brother-sister tandem who have earned world boxing titles. In addition, Del Valle is noted for being the very first women’s boxer to have a match in the same card as her husband, Craig Salamone. Unfortunately, Salamone and Del Valle divorced after some time. She is dubbed as “Honey Girl” as a deference to her brother who has been nicknamed “Honey Boy”.
