Career
Zhang transitioned to the professional ranks in 2014 after a decorated amateur career. His amateur success was extensive, highlighted by winning a silver medal for China at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and securing bronze at two separate World Championships.He built a long undefeated streak as a professional before his first major test against Filip Hrgović in a 2022 title eliminator, where he lost a very close and disputed decision. This loss set the stage for the defining rivalry of his career against Joe Joyce.
In April 2023, Zhang entered as the underdog but delivered a masterful performance, stopping Joyce to capture the WBO Interim Heavyweight Title in a major upset. To prove it was no fluke, he repeated the feat with a spectacular one-punch knockout in their rematch just five months later.
His reign as interim champion was short-lived, as he lost the belt to Joseph Parker via decision in March 2024. However, Zhang quickly rebounded with a highlight-reel knockout of former champion Deontay Wilder in June 2024, reasserting his position as one of the most dangerous men in the division.
