Thurman made his professional debut in November 2007 against Kensky Rodney. He won that fight and proceeded to establish an undefeated record of 8 fights, broken only by his fight against Francisco Garcia, which ended in a No Contest. He then went on undefeated again until he lost to Manny Pacquiao on July 20, 2019.He won his first world title in November 2012. It was the WBO NABO Super Welterweight title, which he won after he beat Carlos Quintana. He defended this in March 2013 against Jan Zaveck. Then in May 2013, he beat Diego Gabriel Chaves and won the WBO Interim Welterweight title. He defended this three times before he won the WBA World Welterweight title in March 2015, which he won against Robert Guerrero.
He defended the title twice and in March 2017, he went up against Danny Garcia and won the WBA Super World Welterweight and the WBC World Welterweight titles. In January 2019, he defended his WBA title against Josesito Lopez. He lost this to Pacquiao in 2019.
After a couple of years of hiatus, he won against Mario Barrios.
