George Kambosos Jr is a professional boxer who was born and raised in New South Wales, Australia. He had previously held titles in WBA (Super), IBF, and The Ring lightweight since 2021. As a child, his grandparents already instilled a principle to “never retreat, never surrender.”
Pre-Boxing Career
Before Kambosos took boxing as an interest, he was playing junior rugby for Gymea Gorillas. Because he was overweight, he experienced bullying from classmates and this motivated his father to enroll him in boxing classes. He was coached by Ricky Stuart, and Stuart drastically helped Kambosos lose weight immediately. Due to his improvement, Kambosos pursued boxing, and as an amateur, he won 85 out of 100 fights before turning professional.
Most Memorable Fights
Kambosos’ first professional fight was with Jayson Mac Gura and he won via technical knockout in the second round. In December 2016, he fought with World Number 9, Brandon Ogilvie, and successfully store the WBA Oceania title from Ogilvie. Five months later, he fought against Krai Settaphone for the WBA Oceania and IBF Pan Pacific titles and won.
Perhaps one of the toughest opponents he had ever encountered was Mickey Bey, where Kambosos won by split decision. He was able to steal the IBF lightweight champion from Bey.
Upcoming Fight with Ryan Garcia
Recently, Kambosos’ promoter announced that he will be fighting Ryan Garcia this year. However, many boxing analysts have criticized that Kambosos might not stand a chance against Garcia. Rolly Romero thinks that it was mere luck that Kambosos won against Teofimo Lopez, as the latter was injured and sick.
