Before becoming a professional boxer, Shawn Porter used to be a football player. He was considered as an all-conference high school football standout in his hometown. When Porter decided to shift his interest to boxing, his father was the one who trained him.

Under the guidance of his father, Porter compiled an incredible amateur fighting record of 276-14. During his amateur career, he bested Danny Jacobs, Edwin Rodriguez, and Demetrius Andrade. In 2007, Porter won the World Golden Gloves championship. After winning the tournament, Porter turned pro a year later.

In 2008, Shawn Porter’s professional debut was defeating Norman Johnson in a technical knockout in the first round. From 2010 to 2011, he was the sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao. This experience led Porter to hone his style with relentless punching and technical prowess.

In 2013, Porter was able to show off the skills he learned as a sparring partner of Pacquiao when he defeated Devon Alexander. Then in 2014, he was challenged by Paulie Malignaggi to his newly won world title. Porter was able to defend his title by defeating Malignaggi in a technical knockout in the fourth round.

Shawn Porter experience his first defeat in 2014. He loses a match against Kell Brook, a British professional boxer, by a 12-round majority decision. In 2015, Porter was able to rebuild his loss by making his debut as part of the Premier Boxing Champions.
